Upratovanie s KonMari

Over the past few months, Marie Kondo‘s name appeared almost everywhere – and especially on social media. But there’s no wonder – the series on Netflix called Tidying Up With Marie Kondo has gained tremendous success and has triggered a chain reaction in which people are getting rid of things and cleaning their homes.
Although I’m one of the people who’ve known this name for several years, since I have been interested in minimalism for quite a long time, it’s possible that you have not yet came across it; or KonMari tells you nothing. However, even if you’re familiar with both, today’s article will give you a brief overview about them.
So to briefly introduce Marie Kondo, she’s an organizing consultant and author of bestsellers dealing with tidying, and she has dedicated her life to helping others find happiness in the form of cleaning. Her method called KonMari (which name consists of her name and surname) ensures that you can easily and quickly tidy your entire home and not return to old tracks, but only clean it once – and you’ll never have to clean again.

Main tips

Marie Kondo is a complete professional in tidying – and has three main tips on how to start tidying any space, while keeping them in mind throughout the process.
1. Clean by category. Although it’s more logical to clean up by room for most, because of such an approach we forget many things – because we have books in our room, in the living room, but often in the kitchen (or even in the toilet); clothing is (apart from our bedroom) also in the hall or laying around here and there. By focusing on each category separately, you won’t forget anything.
2. Everything out. Taking things out on the floor or bed sounds annoying and unnecessary, but only then you’ll really know what you want to keep and what you can get rid of. At the same time, Marie Kondo reminds us that we’ll “wake up” things this way – if they sit in the closet or on the shelf for a long time, we no longer perceive them and it’s as if they weren’t there.
3. Organize at the end. While cleaning, don’t be tempted to start  to put aside the things you choose to keep. There’re two reasons for this – you’ll be distracted and stop focusing on cleaning, but you’ll also feel that you have plenty of storage space and keep things you don’t need.
But how to start with tidying? Marie Kondo has an answer for this, too. She created a list of five items that provide instructions on how to proceed. It’s important that you stick to the list while tidying – you won’t miss anything while doing so, but it’s the fastest way to clean up, as you start with the simplest items, and you’ll be trained at the end:
  1. clothing – all including pajamas, underwear, shoes, handbags and accessories;
  2. books – fiction, biography, cookbooks and English textbooks;
  3. paper – from the necessary documents through letters and postcards to old receipts;
  4. miscellaneous – you can find a complete list of what belongs to this category right here;
  5. sentimental – things from your childhood, presents and so on.
The main question you have to ask each time you take a thing in your hands is Does this spark joy? If the answer is yes, you can keep it without regrets. If you feel nothing while holding it, the thing goes away. If you’re not quite sure about something, you can put it aside for now, but believe me, if the answer isn’t a clear yes, you can probably get rid of it.
In the video, you can see how you should fold things correctly – so they won’t be wrinkled, taking them out of a drawer is easier and everything is right in the front of your eyes.
It’s very important that each thing has its own place – this way nothing will end up in the drawer with another mess, you always know exactly where to look from something, and after using you can return the thing to its place to avoid the mess.
I definitely recommend the book The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, where you can read more about KonMari, as well as Marie Kondo’s life and childhood, or her Netflix show Tidying Up with Marie Kondo, featuring eight episodes and in each you meet people whom Marie helps to tidy up their lives.
And I’m telling you beforehand that the book and the series encourage you to tidy your space, too.

  1. oblečenie – úplne všetko vrátane pyžama, spodnej bielizne, topánok, kabeliek a doplnkov;
  2. knihy – beletria, biografie, kuchárky i učebnice angličtiny;
  3. papier – od potrebných dokumentov cez listy a pohľadnice až po staré pokladničné bloky;
  4. rozmanité – celý zoznam toho, čo pod túto kategóriu patrí, nájdete tu;
  5. sentimentálne – veci z detstva, darčeky a podobne.
