Upratovanie sentimentálnych vecí

I have kept some useless crap ever since I was young. I had drawers filled with papers and small things I refused to throw away because I was convinced that I would need them again. I was rarely willing to throw anything into the trash during cleaning – so during my whole childhood I dragged various drawings, notebooks and inventions my sisters and I had.
Two years ago, when I moved from Prešov to Bratislava, I realized that I would have to get rid of quite a lot of things. Of course, I took with me everything necessary and my goal was to empty all the cabinets and the drawers I had – or leave at the most one, in which I would store everything I can not throw away, but in Bratislava it would be totally useless.
So I had to get rid of most of these sentimental things. From the beginning it was not easy, because I moved about 90% of things from a box into another one, with the fact that I would definitely need it sometimes, or I convinced myself that I could not throw it away. But eventually, I managed to get rid of a great amount of this stuff – and I’ve also thrown out a lot of it in Bratislava.
The school year has already begun, and I assume that everyone who moves to college this autumn, has packed their stuff into boxes already (if they haven’t unpacked as well), but you still have things at home that only have sentimental value – and perhaps this article will benefit you.

What and why

If your are used to putting all your sentimental things in one place, after years they have to take up a whole drawer or a box. We go through such things only once in a whole – when we’re feeling nostalgic; but otherwise we have no idea what we actully keep.
Find some time to spread out in front of you all the sentimental things that you have, and think well over them. These objects often have no value in themselves; rather, they remind us of someone or something, evoking good memories – such as cinema tickets, various tickets, or literally useless things like straws, pieces of paper or stones. Just think about why you decided to keep this thing at home. And if you’ve forgotten why you kept a flyer or bookmark four years ago, you can basically throw it away. Because you will not remember. (And even though you might remember, you still don’t have to feel bad, because this memory obviously doesn’t mean so much to you. Because you forgot about it.)

Gifts

A lot of thing we only store away at home are gifts – or more so something that we’ve been given by someone, but we don’t use it, we don’t need it, and maybe we don’t even like it. But the main reason we’re still keeping it is the feeling of guilt we’d have it we threw it away.
I’ve already said that you do not have to be afraid to regift – and I stand by it. If you know someone who might like some thing and use it, give it to them. And you do not have to worry that when you regift a candle or statuette you have received, and the giver comes to visit you, they will keep finding this gift at your home – because most people forget what they gave. And it’s a gift. You can do what you want with it.

Compromise

If you’ve already got rid of different gifts and trifles that have no value for you anymore, there are probably left only things that remind you of “good old times“.
However, if you are keeping various different things that remind you of the same event, let one and get rid of the others. This way try to find a compromise – so you can keep something that reminds you of something, but without having drawers and drawers filled with useless things.

Virtual memory

We live in the world of technology. It has no point to keep a concert ticket when you have photos and videos stored in your notebook or phone that have more value for you than a piece of paper. If you are afraid to lose these files, invest in an external drive.
You can also make a virtual memory from the sentimental things you are keeping – just take your phone and take a photo. In essence, it’s also something you look no more than a couple of times a year, and it often doesn’t matter if you’re looking at a physical thing or just a photo – more important are the memories it revokes.
I’m not saying you have to put the whole box where you’ve been putting things off for years, straight into the rubbish. But I myself know from my own experience that the things I kept at home were often nothing but wastefulness that only took place and had no value.
You do not have to go to the extreme and get rid of everything – but try to break up what you have, throw away or donate what you do not need. It is not only liberating, but you will have at home only the things you love and will not be buried among the unnecessary. And it will give you more space for new memories.

Čo a prečo

Kompromis
