Tri roky vegetariánkou

I do not know myself how it is possible, that it’s been three years since I went vegetarian – but on the other hand, it’s been a very long time since I last eaten meat.
I read the older article posted a few months after this change, but now I have a feeling that I have not explained my whole story in detail – that’s why I’m with that today, and then I’ll tell you my thoughts after three years.
I’ve never been a person who would love meat. I always ate what I had on my plate, but since during all primary and high school (plus the nursery) I was eating lunch at school, I did not even think about it very much. Nevertheless, I was quite picky and often I did not even touch the piece of meat on my plate – sometimes I did not have appetite for it, but usualy I did not like its smell or appearance.
I have never been able to look at raw meat. When we were young, my sisters and I spent the weekends at my grandma’s – and when she was preparing meat for lunch, I could not even step into the kitchen. I felt the same disgust to shop-windows and I avoided them completely. I absolutely hated them, instead of a piece of meat, I saw the animal. That’s why I did not even look at it – and every thought that reminded me that not only cooked meat, but also ham and sausages come from the same raw meat and therefore from the animal, I rather suppress it quickly.
It is probably understandable that when I was ten, I did not think about vegetarianism at all. Now I do not even know if I ever knew about vegetarianism, or I did not think it is possible to exclude meat from your diner.
In the summer of 2014, when we were on vacation in Croatia, this idea came in my mind. If I remember correctly, it had to do something with the pig that was being roasted outside the restaurant (if you’ve ever been in Croatia or other Mediterranean countries, you definitely have a spotted a barbecue by the street) – and I decided to stop eating meat.
But it only lasted for a week, because as soon as we returned home from our holiday, we went to my grandmother for lunch, which gave me a ten-minute lecture on how important and necessary is meat, and I quietly ate everything on my plate.
Thereby I kept eating meat for another six months and I told myself, I will go vegetarian when I live alone – when I will cook for myself and I will not have to eat in school canteens.
But in January 2015, I started to think about it again. I was considering pros and cons – on the one hand, no one would prepare meals for me at school, and no one would cook anything special for me at home, but on the other hand I did not see why only this should keep me away – we did not always have for a pork for lunch, and a soup with a side seemed to be enough for me to fill me up.
Ninth of February (ironically, after a meat lunch) I definitely said I was going vegetarian.
The beginnings were a bit harder than I expected – I suddenly had to explain to everyone why I gave up eating meat and fish, I found that even the selection in the restaurants was smaller than I expected, and my meals in the school canteen often consisted only of rice and carrot salad. And although there were moments during the first few days, when I sat at the table and saw the others eating one of my favourite meals, I considered whether it made any sense – I did not stop.
Because I know why I am doing it.
No, I do not miss meat. Not a little bit. I have no substitutes, I do not soy meat as an alternative and imagine with closed eyes it’s a peace of beef. There are not moments when I wish I could eat meat, I do not think about quiting it, it doesn’t even cross my mind what it would be like if I could have chicken instead of chickpeas. Trust me, if I would want to quit vegetarianism, I would have done it ages ago. And I eat exactly what you eat – only without the meat, meat products and fish. I eat pasta, I eat rice, I eat potatoes. But most importantly, I eat so much more vegetables and fruits than before – my lunch often consists of three kinds of vegetables and I do not even think that something is missing on my plate.
Proteins that I lose form not eating meat (because the first thing my parents cared about was where will I get the protein, although in the meat is not as much as of it you may think), I do not substitute and I do not count if I had enough of it per day. However, I eat a fairly large amount of legumes – so I do have a lot of protein.
At the moment I’m trying vegan diet, meaning I do not eat any animal products, and so far I do not only try to stick to it, but I’m very excited about this change – but I’ll tell you more about it another time.
Lebo viem, prečo to robím.
A jem presne to, čo vy – len bez mäsa, mäsových výrobkov a rýb.
