Cruelty-free, vegánska vs. prírodná kozmetika

Animal testing is something that we’re slowly leaving in the past. Many brands claim that they stopped testing their products or individual ingredients on living creatures, and the harsh conditions that are the reality for more than 115 million animals are becoming an interest to more and more people.
But this term is often misused and confused with others, or more so – many people aren’t quite sure about what it means when products are cruelty-free, when they are vegan and when they are natural.

Cruelty-free

Since 2004, in the European Union is a law under which cosmetic brands can’t test products on animals; and this law was extended in 2013 by a regulation prohibiting the testing of used ingredients and substances. Companies cannot bypass the law by testing outside the EU and importing products either.
All cosmetic products that we find in drugstores or beauty stores are not tested on animals. However, the problem is that many brands sell their products in China, where animal testing is required for safety – and although the brand itself doesn’t test their products, the company in charge of controlling all imported products is required to do so; which implies that these brands are actually tested and therefore can’t be considered cruelty-free.

Vegan-friendly

Vegan cosmetic products don’t contain any substances and ingredients of animal origin – such as honey, beeswax, royal jelly, colours obtained by grinding insects, fish scales (used in eye shadows), animal fats and so on. Thus, products that are labeled as vegan don’t contain components from live or dead animals.

Natural Beauty

Natural beauty products don’t contain any synthetic substances. This doesn’t mean that all ingredients are organic, non-toxic or irritating – although brands producing only natural cosmetics focus on ensuring that products meet the highest standards. Under natural beauty falls also clean natural beauty that doesn’t contain any coloring agents, formaldehyde, parabens or perfumes. But natural cosmetics can also use animal products such as beeswax, milk or honey.

Certificates

Look for certificate labels on the products to ensure that products and brands aren’t tested on animals or they’re vegan friendly. The best are:
  • Leaping Bunny – these brands don’t test products or ingredients on animals, nor do they sell their products in China,
  • Vegan Society – the certificate ensures that products don’t contain any animal ingredients,
  • Soil Association – products don’t contain genetically modified ingredients, phthalates, synthetic substances, controversial chemicals, parabens, dyes or fragrances.
However, the fact that a brand doesn’t have a certificate doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t trust them when they claim that they don’t test on animals. The certification process takes several months, is quite hard and, of course, they have to pay for it; and thus it’s much easier for many manufacturers to write that they’re cruelty-free, use only vegan or natural substances than to pay for a certification. Blind believing is also not the best. If you’re not sure whether a brand is testing on animals, check the Cruelty-Free Kitty page; if you want to know if all the ingredients are vegan, check the composition (which is either on the product or on their site) – if you don’t know what the ingredient even is and where it comes from, I recommend biooo.cz. It’s in Czech, but you can easily translate it!
